Do You Need a Student Visa to Study at a London Language School?

UK Student Visa

One of the most important things you need to know before you choose to study at a London language school is whether you’ll need a student visa. Depending on your home country and the kind of course you’re studying, you may need a visa to come to the UK and to enrol in an English language school.

How to find out if you need a visa

It’s always a really good idea to get professional advice in your home country about whether you need a visa to study at a London language school. In some situations you won’t need a visa at all, for example if your home country is in the EU. However, generally if you come from outside the EEA, you’ll need to apply for a visa. Some students will need to do this in their home country, while others can do it once in the UK. You can find out which applies to you by getting reputable immigration advice in your home country or on the UK government’s website.

Applying for a visa

A common mistake made by many students planning to learn English in London is leaving it too late to apply for a visa. You should always start the process as early as possible, and check how long it’s likely to take. Be sure not to commit to an English language course in London before you know you’ll have a visa in time.
As part of your visa application, you might also need:

  • to show documents about your finances or qualifications
  • go to an interview
  • take a test to show you’ve reached a certain level of competence in the English language.

What you can do with a student visa

If you get a visa to study at a London language school, you may have certain restrictions on what you can and can’t do. For example you may be restricted in things like:

  • the length of course you can take
  • whether you can work part-time alongside your English language studies
  • whether or not you can bring your family with you to the UK.

It’s really important to make sure you understand what kind of visa you need and what restrictions it might place on you before you travel to London – that way you’ll be well prepared and will minimise the likelihood of problems while you’re studying at a London language school.
