If you’re coming to London to learn English, then improving your language skills is likely to be top of your list of priorities. However, if you really want to use the experience to improve your work prospects, then why not consider a course that combines classroom learning with experience in a British workplace? Many London language schools, including Bloomsbury International, offer English plus work experience courses, which can be a fantastic way to get the most out of your time learning English in London.
How it works
An English plus work experience course will have two distinct components:
- A classroom-based English skills course
- A work experience placement in a British workplace, which could be anything from a hospital to a media company.
Combining both these learning experiences will provide a fantastic addition to your resume or CV – not only will you be able to show you have spent time learning vital English language skills among native speakers, but you’ll have experience of putting those skills into practice in real-life work situations. This could give you a winning edge over your rivals when it comes to getting a job or a promotion at work.
Your English course
You’ll be able to choose an English course that suits your requirements and will help you gain the skills you need to complete your work placement successfully. Depending on your existing English language skills, this could be a shorter 4-week course, or it could be as long as 12 weeks. Whatever duration you choose, the focus of your English course will be on helping you to develop English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as well as improving your pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. By the end of the course, your ability to communicate in work situations will have improved, as will your confidence, meaning you’re ready to start your work experience placement.
Your work experience placement
If you choose an English plus work experience course at Bloomsbury International, one of the biggest benefits you’ll find is that we will arrange your work experience placement for you. This means you don’t need to worry about not having the contacts to arrange it yourself. We will match your skills, qualifications and experience to a suitable work experience placement that will help you improve your English language skills in a work environment that’s relevant to you. If you want to work in hospitality or healthcare and meet certain nationality requirements, we may be able to arrange you a paid placement of 6 months or longer. Other placements will be unpaid and for shorter durations, but could be in a wide range of industries, from media to finance.
Other London language schools may offer similar courses but they might not arrange your work placement – so be sure to check before you make a final decision.
Is it right for me?
Only you can decide if this is the right way for you to learn English in London. However, if you’re keen to gain some practical ‘hands on’ experience of using your English skills in a work environment, English with work experience could be what you’re looking for.
