Strategy Inventory for Language Learning
A strategy inventory for language learning is formalized tool that answers the question of what method is best for one particular learner, or group of learners, to learn a foreign language. A particular strategy inventory for language learning was developed by Professor Rebecca Oxford of Columbia University in New York City, USA. This inventory consists of a number of questions that are designed to give particular meaning about your own unique learning style. The evaluation procedure of the Oxford designed strategy inventory for language learning is that after a potential language student goes through the strategy inventory for language learning, a careful evaluation of each question and how it is answered is made and a particular method of learning is created for that student.
This is helpful when considering what particular modality a student might choose to learn a foreign language. When the questions are examined by themselves, they may not appear to be significant to particular learning styles and modalities. However, in a statistical sense, when grouped together and analyzed, measures of learning styles as they apply to language learning can be gleaned from the questionnaire as the strategy inventory for language learning has been proven both reliable and statistically valid in measuring the best method of learning a foreign language.
Organizations and training schools could make good use of the Oxford model, or develop similar models that would be helpful to move students through the initial stages of wanting to learn a foreign language, to recommending a full strategic plan for language learning as applied to that particular student. In a marketing context, a strategy inventory for language learning can be an extremely effective tool.
