Stages of Learning a Second Language
There are several stages of learning a second language. Each one counts as an important step as one becomes proficient in a second language. The first step may be to put aside any assumptions about the new language as it relates to your own native language. This may prove to be a difficult task for some, but it will serve to clear the mind of any beliefs or assumptions that the student has about the new language and replaces any fears with an open and clear mind about assimilating into the language learning process.
The next thing that is important to do as one goes through the stages of learning a second language is to decide what method is most preferable to study. Should one enter a language program in the native speaking country? Should one simply take an online or correspondence course in their home country? Obviously, several factors are at work, including family and work obligations, expenses and travel arrangements as well as time commitment to learning a second language.
As one goes through the stages of learning a second language, one should keep in mind that the learning will be highly dependent on the level of immersion into the culture, language and society of the country. For example, an immersion program in the country will have a quicker potential for retention than will a program that might be taken over one or two weekends where the actual language is not being rehearsed, written, spoken and therefore may not be retained.
