Learning a Second Language
Learning a second language is challenging because we learn a second language differently than we learn our first. As babies we absorb language naturally and intuit the rules that languages follow. The window on this learning process closes with childhood, and after this period we must learn a new language differently, and it often requires a much more sustained effort. However, learning a second language does not need to be overly complex or too difficult provided that the student has the right tools. These tools include a scientifically approved curriculum and dedicated teachers who work hard to help their students to succeed.
Almost any one is capable of learning a second language, but not everyone will learn the same way. Some are successful learning from books and tapes, but most require sustained interaction with human teachers in order to succeed. Total language immersion, typically by living in a country where one’s new language is the dominant tongue, is often the best way to learn the language because it becomes essential to understand the tongue in order to get along in everyday life. In order to select the method that’s best for you, you should think about your strengths and weaknesses and consider the ways you learn best. When you have an understanding of how you learn, you can move forward with selecting the program that is most appropriate for your needs.
