Ahead of the game  (Spoken)


Meaning You are ahead of the game if you have an advantage over your competitors in any activity in which you try to do better than others, such as in business, academia, sports, etc.


Wife: (Moaning) Why are you working so hard? Let’s go out and party! We never have any fun anymore!


Husband: Because my dear I have to stay ahead of the game so our business does well and makes more money than our competitors


Wife: (Moaning) There must be more to life than staying ahead of the game. It so boring!!
(Yawns) We never go out anymore!


Husband: Well darling if you insist on buying those very expensive clothes, I have no choice


Wife: (Silent)

Ahead of the game is usually used with the verbs keep, be, and stay
