Language Learning Technologies
There are a number of language learning technologies that have been developed by both computer software manufacturers, gaming companies (known as edutainment) and schools of foreign language that are designed to provide learners of foreign languages with skills that are necessary to create a successful retention rate of a foreign language.
Language learning technologies can be viewed on a continuum of learning as part of an overall modality of language learning. Specific technologies are designed to teach learners in a method that appeals to their particular way of learning. Language learning technologies have the key benefit that they can be customized based on this learning “type” scale, and enhanced for the greatest level of learning. One other key benefit of language learning technologies is that they can be used based on the needed pacing of the learner. For example, in a traditional classroom of language learning, certain students might find the material to be gone through too quickly. With language learning technologies, materials can be absorbed at the learner’s pace, and stopped and backed up as needed, in order to retain information that might have been missed the first time around.
As with all learning technologies, language learning technologies are only as effective as the learner’s dedication to the process. With the right attitude, time management effectiveness and clear goals for learning a language, language learning technologies can prove to be an effective means for foreign language learning.
