English Grammar Lessons
One of the most exciting areas of teaching is the practice of giving English grammar lessons to students learning English as a second language. Why is this exciting? At the most basic level, teaching grammar sounds boring, but giving English grammar lessons is about much more than producing literate students. It offers an opening to the culture and society of English-speaking countries. When teaching a student English grammar, you are teaching that person how to function in English language societies and giving them tools to achieve their aspirations. As a result, the English language teacher is more than a guide to putting words in order. The teacher is a passport to a global society.
English grammar lessons can take many forms but they revolve around the same key ideas: Giving the student the tools they need to learn how to manipulate English properly and thus be able to join a globalized society whose primary language is English. Giving students this gift is a passport to the world of tomorrow, a ticket to the international world of arts, culture, and business, a place where the English language student can move forward with a new skill and new knowledge. In order to succeed in the international marketplace, English is increasingly a requirement in today’s globalized world, and English grammar lessons are an important first step to joining the international community on their own terms.
